This workshop will discuss what an interpreter needs to consider with working in an interactive setting. Participants will discuss the various types of settings where interactive interpreting takes place. Interactive interpreting is different compared to straight ASL to English or English to ASL and can impact the product because of time constraints. Interpreters need to understand how to effectively manage processing time to allow for a better flow of the product. This workshop takes an abridged look at interactive interpreting and how the product changes when there are time constrictions. Participants will focus on how to make sure turn taking is happening and techniques to use when the overlap starts to occur. Interpreters will learn about the impact of eye gaze during their interpretation and ways to improve their product by having control of this skill. This workshop will also allow interpreters to practice these skills using ASL to English as well as English to ASL in guided practice.
Educational Objectives:
Participants will be able to
- Describe various interactive interpreting settings.
- Identify and describe the skills needed to have effective flow managing processing time in interactive interpreting.
- Explain the effect eye gaze has on the product during interactive interpreting.
- Describe how to transfer meaning from ASL to English and English to ASL in the interactive product.
