This presentation introduces interpreters to the foundational concepts of phonology, the branch of linguistics that studies the sound systems of languages. The first part explores spoken language phonology. The second part transitions to sign language phonology, covering Stokoe’s system, the Hold-Movement theory, and how signs are analyzed within these frameworks. The presentation concludes with examples of phonological processes in ASL, highlighting the parallels and distinctions between spoken and signed language phonology.
