This workshop introduces ASL-English interpreters to the major subdisciplines of linguistics and how each contributes to a deeper understanding of language and communication. By examining areas such as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and psycholinguistics, interpreters will gain insights into the structure and function of both spoken and signed languages. Emphasis will be placed on how these subfields apply directly to interpreting practice, including how meaning is constructed, how variation impacts communication, and how language is processed in real-time. The workshop will connect theory to practice with real-world examples from ASL and English to support more accurate and nuanced interpretation.

  • Identify the major subdisciplines of linguistics and explain their relevance to language analysis and interpretation.
  • Apply basic concepts from linguistics (e.g., phonology, syntax, pragmatics) to enhance understanding of both English and ASL structures.
  • Analyze how linguistic variation, meaning, and context affect interpretation decisions and communication outcomes.
