This presentation introduces ASL interpreters to foundational ethical systems that provide deeper context for understanding their Code of Professional Conduct. The session explores how consequentialist ethics, virtue ethics, deontological ethics, and social contract theory offer frameworks for interpreting ethical obligations and decision-making. Participants will examine real-world scenarios to reflect on how these philosophical approaches influence professional values such as integrity, accountability, and respect. By linking abstract ethical theory to interpreting practice, the workshop seeks to enrich interpreters’ understanding of their responsibilities and support more informed ethical choices in the field.
Educational Objectives:
Participants will be able to
- Identify and describe four foundational ethical systems: consequentialism, virtue ethics, deontological ethics, and social contract theory.
- Analyze how these ethical systems relate to the principles found in the ASL Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct.
- Apply ethical theories to real-life interpreting scenarios to evaluate professional decision-making.
