In the fast-paced world of on-demand Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), interpreters are routinely dropped into complex, high-stakes situations with zero advanced context. How do we establish immediate rapport, ensure linguistic accuracy, and uphold the RID Code of Professional Conduct (CPC) when we have just seconds to assess the virtual room?
Led by Stephanie Dyer, a practitioner with over 30 years of interpreting and 20 years of VRS/VRI experience, this on-demand workshop equips interpreters with actionable strategies to thrive in unpredictable, low-context environments. Participants will explore the practical and ethical application of CPC Tenets 2, 4, and 6 through real-world scenarios. The curriculum moves from the physical workstation to the screen, covering technical setup optimization, dynamic conversational scripting, and techniques for conducting rapid visual and auditory “sweeps” to inform interpreting choices. Interpreters will also examine VRI-specific turn-taking techniques, “interpreter asides,” and vital linguistic/paralinguistic considerations—from navigating the ASL continuum to managing physical constraints and mental health scenarios. Ultimately, attendees will leave with the tools necessary to build trust, avoid erroneous assumptions, and make rapid ethical decisions in the 2D workspace.
Educational Objectives:
Participants will be able to
- Apply CPC Tenet 4 (Respect for Consumers) to critically evaluate and optimize their physical VRI workstation, ensuring appropriate lighting, background, and camera.
- Formulate and deliver conversational, trust-building introduction scripts that successfully adapt to unexpected interruptions or high-stress situations while adhering to CPC Tenet 2.
- Conduct rapid visual and auditory assessments (“sweeps”) of zero-context, on-demand VRI environments to ethically gather situational clues and inform subsequent linguistic and behavioral choices.
- Demonstrate VRI-specific clarification and turn-taking techniques, successfully utilizing transparent “interpreter asides” and managing disparate visual/auditory cues between hearing and Deaf consumers.
